Nestled within Auckland's swanky suburb of Remuera is Benson Road Deli (BRD). Parked outside are Remuera tractors (4WDs) that never get dirty and it is the common meeting place for handbag dogs and plenty of makeup. Affluent entertainment aside you are always guaranteed a well made Allpress coffee and a fine selection of cabinet and menu food.
The black décor creates a polished atmosphere nonetheless is it a cosy café with a few local hits such as the Oaty Caramel slice. "I have been away for two weeks, just flown in, and had to stop here on my way home to have my oaty caramel." I kid you not.
They have a standard breakfast menu of French toast, a variety of egg dishes or toasty assortment. Along with the menu there is a large selection of cabinet food from numerous slices to pastas, wraps, homemade pies, and panini's. They make there own aioli which is exquisitely divine and occasionally sell pots of it. The large kitchen out the back ensures all of there food is made on site making this suburban gem unique.
There is nothing like turning up in lycra to give the staring affluent something to look at, and there is plenty of outside seating for lycra clad sweaty bums. The opening hours are long (6pm) so an after work caffeinated hit is fabulous starter before going across the road to the Maple Room for a vino or before heading out for that after work ride. On weekends it is one of the few cafes open to 5.30pm and if you are lucky enough at the end of the day benson road flowers a few doors down may just give you free flowers if you smile nicely as they discard their leftovers.
So next time you are on your way through Remuera it is highly recommended you park up your bike and try BRD – you won't be disappointed.
